UNCLE SAM SCHOOL

This district was formed from the Kelsey Creek School District. It was started in 1868 in a building at what is now the corner of second and Gard Streets. In 1869 there were 36 pupils, but by 1881 the enrollment had increased to 99. So part of the classes were held in a former paint shop building. Later, they moved to the Christian Church and then to the Woodmen of the World Hall. After that, the surplus children were sent to the top floor of one of the hotels, which is now the Brick Tavern in Kelseyville.
In 1884, a 2-room schoolhouse was built on the east side of 3rd St., south of Gaddy Lane. In 1907, the name of the school was changed from Uncle Sam to Kelseyville Grammar School. About 1920, a much larger school was built.
